With a new decade comes new beginnings for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and it all starts with a surprise appearance and a rather unique accessory.

Indeed Duchess Catherine and Prince William are understood to be enjoying a little downtime out of the public eye following Christmas 2019, but in an unexpected move, the pair made a public appearance on Sunday, January 5.

And possibly even more exciting than seeing the royals themselves was the simple fact that Kate was wearing something we’ve never seen her in before – a fedora!

The royal couple were spotted attending a morning church service at St Mary Magdalene Church, which is located in Sandringham, Norfolk.

The royal pair made a sight for sore eyes as they smiled at onlookers, and there was no denying the heavenly ensemble Kate put together for the occasion.

Wearing a maroon-toned wool coat by Roksanda Denton, the Duchess provided all the winter-chic inspiration we never knew we needed.

She paired the look with chic heeled Stuart Weitzman Boots in black, and topped it all off with a navy blue fedora by Hicks and Brown Suffolk.

Suffice to say we’re obsessed with this outfit!

Wills was also wrapped up warm in a wool coat.

Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton also joined their daughter and son-in-law for the service, although missing from the regal clan was the pair’s young children Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one.

It is likely the children stayed back with a babysitter (or their nanny!) at the Cambridges’ private country residence, Anmer Hall.

The royals often spend their holidays in the Norfolk location, but it is expected that they will return back to Kensington Palace this week as George and Charlotte start a new school term in London.

Kate and Wills will soon return to London with their three children.

This isn’t the first time the royals have surprised us at Sandringham in recent weeks.

Indeed for their annual Christmas Day church appearance, Kate and Wills stepped out with their two eldest children George and Charlotte in a grand debut for the ages.

The two young royals had never attended the church service before, and it would be safe to claim that they single-handedly stole the entire show.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were utterly adorable as they made their first Christmas Day appearance.

Wearing an adorable green coat on the day, Charlotte proved she’s already becoming a fashionista in her own right – just like her mum.

George meanwhile was looking smart in pants and a tailored jacket.

And the young family will be celebrating a milestone this week – Kate’s 38th birthday.

According to PEOPLE, she and Wills usually set aside a weekend at the beginning of the year to celebrate the big event with close friends and family.

Her birthday falls on January 9, and is typically celebrated with countryside activities including shooting and sometimes a dinner with the Queen, the publication reports.

And if Kate’s latest chic outfit is anything to go by, we’re in for another year of glorious fashion moments from our style queen.

Happy birthday indeed!
