Do you need a style makeover and have no idea where to start? Here are five easy style tips that you can implement right now to step out of your style slump and into a brand new you just in time for 2018.

1. Steal her style

What style are you? Classic? Boho? Minimalist? Glamorous?

If you have no clue, find someone whose style you love – famous or not – and imitate their style. I’m not suggesting you copy their look from head to toe (that’s more along the ‘stalking’ line) but I do encourage you take inspiration from their style and make it your own.

Do you love Rachel Zoe? You’re a ‘glamour boho’ girl. Julianne Moore’s style? Classic is your preference. Is jewellery your thing? Be inspired by the accessories maestro, Iris Apfel. More of a minimalist? Tilda Swinton is queen.

Defining who you are and what style you love is the first step to style reinvention.

2. Divide and conquer your wardrobe

Culling your wardrobe is absolutely essential for a style makeover.

Set aside a Saturday afternoon, grab an honest and impartial girlfriend and declutter your wardrobe. As a general rule, aside from the classic wardrobe must-haves (some of which may need an update), it’s time to go if:

  • you haven’t worn it for two years (or two seasons)

  • it no longer fits (do not keep it for ‘when I lose weight’ because when and if you lose weight the chances are the style will no longer suit)

  • was a bad fashion choice and has never been worn – let it go, it’s never going to work

  • it still has the price tag (again – it’s never going to work)

  • if it’s circa 1980’s (and grunge 1990’s), the donation pile is the only place for it

Do not under any circumstances ask your spouse or children to help because, love you as they do, they cannot be entirely objective.

3. Understand your body shape

Are you a pear, apple or rectangle? Understanding your shape and proportion will help you to make better fashion choices and will ultimately lead to feeling more confident and comfortable in your clothes.

4. Reinvent yourself

I love this quote from spiritual teacher and author Marianne Williamson :

“You must learn a new way to think before you can master a new way to be”.

And so it is with style.

As we age our body shape changes and our style needs to change with it. What suited you 5, 10, 20 years ago may not suit you now.

Your changing body can be hard to accept initially – but don’t despair there is plenty of great style to be had. You may not need a complete style change but a ‘tweak’ here and there. Can’t wear your favourite mini anymore? Well how about a sexy and chic pencil skirt to the knee?

5. #Attitudenotage

It’s not just my social media hash tag but a personal philosophy I live by and impart to my clients.

Great style is largely about a great attitude. Look to famous over-40 style icons and they all share a common trait – a great attitude towards style, beauty and body image.

Don’t be defined by anyone else’s opinion of who you are and what you should wear.

Own you age, your style and your body and reap the ultimate reward – feeling comfortable in your own skin.
