It’s one thing to be aware of your flaws, it’s another to do something about them.

For Locky Gilbert, a spot of self-improvement was the motivation to sign up for SAS Australia.

The 32-year-old reality TV regular is the first to admit he’s “this cocky, alpha male, self-obsessed kind of guy” and doesn’t like giving up control.

And while those qualities have served him well, he recognises the time has come for a change.

“You could go through life being that cocky kind of person, but I’m at a stage where I’ve got an amazing partner in Irena [Srbinovska] and if I keep being that cocky, selfish person, the relationship can’t grow,” Locky tells.

“I’ve always put myself first, and that’s helped me travel the world and get these amazing opportunities, but I’m ready to settle down, have a family, get married, and if I’m just thinking of myself, that can’t happen.

“I need to be able to put Irena first, put the kids first – and SAS kind of forced me into doing that. To be a better father and husband, I need to make those changes.”

Being involved in SAS Australia meant not just re-evaluating his priorities but confronting some harsh truths.

This week, Locky is told he is a “liability” and summoned for a no-holds-barred interrogation.

“It’s pretty intimidating,” says Locky.

“Parts of me wanted to argue back, but you know you’ve got to just sit there and take it. Them calling me a liability absolutely killed me.”

The reprimand stems from a blow-up between the former Australian Survivor contestant and Pauly Fenech, 49. Expected to cooperate on a task, the two men butt heads.

“We just did not see eye to eye,” says Locky. “It was his way or the highway.”

Although you might think the rigours of SAS Australia would turn Locky off taking part in another reality show, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.

“I’d love to do The Block with Irena – that would be quite funny and is a dream we both have,” he says.
