Married at First Sight: The real reason why Ning doesn’t give her new husband a chance

If you watched Wednesday’s episode of Married at First Sight then you would know that hairdresser Ning Surasiang, 32, and Mark Scrivens, 41, tied the knot in a very, um, awkies, ceremony.

But it wasn’t just the ceremony that had us cringing.

In fact, the entire wedding had us feeling less warm and fuzzy and more gigantic ice storm courtesy of Elsa from Frozen… we mean Ning.

Throughout the entire ceremony, Els… Ning looked everywhere but at her husband-to-be, cracking horrendous jokes and making everyone feel terribly uncomfortable.

Her lack of eye contact, which looked like this:

…was coupled with her inability to say anything nice – and while some of it was relatable – “I’m just here for the food and the drinks” – it made for truly awful viewing.

In fact, we felt very sorry for dear old Mark Scrivens with the good hair and the nice teeth “so he’s told”.

Mark, the guy who had never said the “L” word in his life, even though he’s 41 and should absolutely know how to at least pronounce it.

Who showed us just how single he is with his one blue plastic cup, one set of cutlery and a dishwasher with nothing in it – who desperately wants a life partner to sit next to him on his Ikea picnic bench.

The reception was no different. The Ice Queen sat with her back towards her new husband and flat out ignored him and if it wasn’t for her very nice friends, who clearly are the ones who provide voice of reason in this Disney love story, she would never have looked at him again.

But all jokes aside, Ning does have quite a backstory and as John Aiken says:

“For Ning, the theme of abandonment has occurred multiple times throughout her life,” he revealed to the other experts, Mel Schilling and Trish Stratford.

“First her mum and then the father of her children, she’s now so afraid of being left again that she’s developed strong defence mechanisms. She can sometimes push men away.”

It was quite evident that Ning had built a very large and strong cement brick wall in front of Mark, not even giving him a chance.

For Ning, being born in another country, adjusting to life in Australia has not always been easy. Before she moved here, her mother left her in Thailand with her grandmother.

“I just felt a bit abandoned and I don’t want to feel like that,” she told John during their pre-wedding chat.

“It’s one of those things that you can’t let go. All these years I have been burying my past and sometimes the past comes and bites you.”

“It’s been quite hard for me to deal with my own issues as a child and bringing up children on my own.”

Ning finally gives Mark a chance…(Channel 9)

So could Mark be the one to give Ning all that she desires?

“Ning and Mark are both at the stage where they value stability and security, plus they value family very highly,” Trisha revealed when pairing them together.

“I just hope that Ning can let her guard down. Her abandonment issues means she has a tendency to put up walls and her brash sense of humour can be a front to hide her insecurities.”

We just hope that now Ning is giving Mark a chance that he is able to break down that wall.
