“Dom deserved better”: Why MAFS viewers are siding with Domenica Calarco in her bitter spat with Olivia Frazer

It was the wine glass smash heard around the nation!

Aside from the Holly and Andrew saga that now feels like it took place years ago, Married At First Sight‘s ninth season has been relatively tame up until glass-gate erupted on Monday night.

Olivia Frazer and Domenica Calarco went head-to-head at the couples’ retreat this week, which culminated in a screaming match and Domenica smashing a wine glass on the table in frustration.

The pair’s feud escalated the following night when Domenica issued a tearful apology to the group, while Olivia made it clear she wasn’t over the incident.

But things only became more bitter at the dinner party on Wednesday night after the pair went for round three – or maybe four, we’ve also lost track at this point.

“You of all people were never going to accept the apology,” Domenica yelled at Olivia, who responded: “I would appreciate a good apology, I was never going to accept it. It was just riddled with excuses.”

Domenica said she walked away from their previous argument as it was a “very difficult” situation to be in, but Olivia doubled down, responding: “So is a smashed glass to your face.”

While shocking, Domenica isn’t the first contestant in MAFS history to resort to using crockery to get their point across, and she most likely won’t be the last.

It comes after Domenica smashed a wine glass during a heated altercation on Monday night.

Fans will remember that in the show’s sixth season, Martha Kalifatidis ran up behind Cyrell Paule at a dinner party and dumped wine over her head.

Cyrell then chased after Martha and threw red wine all over the back of her white (Prada, as she reminded us at the time) dress, giving us a MAFS moment for the ages.

Instead of this behaviour being discouraged, better yet, not being aired at all, it was glorified.

The scene was not only dubbed as “iconic” but has led to Martha having her own spin off segment on Channel Nine’s Married At First Sight page dubbed Martha’s Red Wine Moments.

Then during last year’s season, resident “villain” Bryce Ruthven and his onscreen arch nemesis Sam Carraro found themselves bickering and yelling outrageous insults at each other.

Perhaps taking a little inspiration from Martha, Bryce then hurled his water across the table in Sam’s direction, causing absolute chaos among the group.

But unlike the payoff that ensued after Martha’s wine toss, Bryce was met with fury from fans who called him out for his “aggressive” behaviour.

Olivia labelled Domenica’s glass-smashing “assault”.

But in a stark comparison, viewers haven’t been as quick to condemn Domenica’s outburst, with many fans instead flocking to her defence.

“Watching Jackson put Olivia in her place was the most satisfying thing to happen all season, then her getting SO upset because she got called out,” one viewer commented following the glass smash heard around the nation.

An overwhelming amount of viewers conceded that Olivia had used passive aggression to “push” Dom to her, and quite literally the glass’, breaking point.

“Sweet sweet Olivia didn’t last long 🙄 Jackson’s holding her accountable for her nit picking comments to rile Dom up,” said another.

“Dom deserved better, she sticks up for what’s right and there’s nothing wrong with that,” said another.

Fans were overwhelmingly in support of Domenica.

“I would have thrown the glass in @olivefrazer face! Team @domenica.calarco all the way!”

But other viewers speculated over whether Dom’s actions were technically assault, which Olivia had claimed during the couple’s retreat.

“So did Dom assault somebody? I didn’t see Dom threaten anyone with violence although she did a violent act and was angry. If she had threatened, she was most certainly acting under duress,” one MAFS shared on Twitter.

“[Olivia and Domenica] aren’t in romantic relationship but the same behavior would be considered DV if against an intimate partner,” said another.

“Ppl should NOT be giving support to Domenica, they should be saying go do a behavior management class!” another read.
