The House Rules teams were faced with their biggest challenge yet this week when they took on the mammoth task of transforming Tanya and Dave’s huge family home.
While some teams like plumbers Aimee and Kayne rose to the occasion to help give Tanya and Dave the family home of their dreams, others fell short.
Loveable larrikins Laith and George were heavily criticised for wasting time on unimportant elements to the detriment of areas. Their choices hurt them in the end when they left painting and finishes incomplete.
The same woes plagued mother and son team Lenore and Bradley. After an emotional week, they delivered underwhelming and unfinished rooms.,
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Aimee and Kayne shone and judges Kyly Clarke, Saul Myers and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen praised their outstanding work.
The couple was rewarded with $10,000 and first place for their efforts for their take on the house rules, which included giving Tanya and Dave a natural, coastal home, with storage space for the whole family.

Before House Rules‘ Aimee and Kayne arrived, Tanya and Dave’s living area was stock standard.

Saul enjoyed that the new space was “big, boisterous and relaxed” while Kyly loved the dusty tones. There were concerns the lounge was too big for the space, however.

Proving good things come in small packages, Saul declared Aimee and Kayne’s powder room his “favourite, by far” and LLB called it “surprising genius”.

Aimee and Kayne were also tasked with overhauling young Ben’s bedroom, with Kyly complimenting the “fun” wallpaper. Saul and Laurence took aim at the bed, pointing out that if you were going to the trouble of making it yourself, at least make it a bold or bespoke statement.

While the judges admitted the walk-in-robe may not have hit all the house rules, they thought it looked stylish.

The ensuite was part of Tamara and Rhys’ zone.

The ensuite received good feedback from the judges. Kyly particularly liked the choice of tiles.

Tamara and Rhys had better luck in the dining room. Saul loved the statement table and the texture added thanks to the pendant light.

Best mates Laith and George were ready to turn the heat up to transform the kitchen.

The end result left Tanya and Dave with “more ovens than cabinets” and the judges commented positively on the spacious feel.

Laith and George also worked tirelessly on the stairs and landing.

The boys were torn to shreds by the judges for ripping out the banisters, costing them precious time that meant they weren’t able to complete their painting or finishes.

Although out of their comfort zone, Laith and George did a cute job on four-year-old Emily’s bedroom and even left plenty of space so she could continue her ballet practice.

Tanya and Dave were coveting a master bedroom to act as a sanctuary away from the kids.

Tassie twins Kimmy and Rhi were on hand, hoping to deliver.

Kyly thought the finished room was cosy and Saul agreed, saying there were some nice elements that were subtle and not overpowering.

The bathroom needed a bit of elbow grease to get up to scratch.

The bathroom was slammed for its finishes and the judges were left particularly unimpressed by the upside down tiles.

Meanwhile, mother-and-son duo Lenore and Bradley had their hands full with the laundry.

While Kyly liked the dusty blue tiles, the overall feeling was that the pair had bitten off more than they could chew and simply couldn’t finish in time.

Their kids’ bedroom for eight-year-old Luke was a hit for its creativity and purpose but details like unfinished wallpaper let them down.
