In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, pregnant women and their families have had to adjust to some new restrictions and guidelines, including mum-to-be Jasmine Yarbrough.

The 35-year-old shoe designer is due to give birth in May, but her husband Karl Stefanovic, 45, has revealed that some adjustments have been made to their birthing plans, as many of the baby’s relatives will not be able to attend the birth, as they live interstate.

Speaking to Brisbane radio trio Stav, Abby and Matt, the Today Show host revealed that healthcare professionals have told him that even he may not be able to watch the birth of his fourth child.

“They have told me that if I show any symptoms of coronavirus or if I’ve got anything that even looks like a flu, that I won’t be allowed in the birthing room, and that goes for everyone, so all the normal attitudes,” he said on the air.

He added that Jasmine’s parents and her 94-year-old grandmother were originally going to fly down from Queensland for the birth of their first grandchild and first great-grandchild, respectively, but plans have had to change.

“All the normal things that you would do that would be a great celebration in a family’s life have been curtailed a bit, but I guess you’ve just got to go through it and have a big party at the end of it,” he said.

The hosts then joked that at least Karl’s Today Show colleague Richard Wilkins, who has finally tested negative for the virus, could visit, to which Karl remarked, “Dickie’s not coming anywhere near my wife!”

Speaking to his co-host Allison Langdon on Thursday morning’s episode of Today, Karl also confessed that his own mother, who lives in far north Queensland, won’t be present at the birth either.

“I spoke to my mum, mum is terribly anxious because she’s in Cairns on her own and trying to isolate,” Karl said.

“She has anxiety about not being with us with the baby coming. That builds for her and I just said to her, because this Lifeline counsellor said to me, ‘You focus on the positives.'”

Though the baby is Karl and Jasmine’s first child together, Karl is already a father to three children, from his previous marriage to Cassandra Thorburn.

The former couple share custody of Jackson, 20, Ava, 14 and River, 12.
