Gone are the days when modern, funky homewares were only for the cashed-up super stylish. These days Aussie department stores like Kmart, Big W, Target and Aldi’s famous middle aisle are in a battle to capture the dollars of regular folks by releasing homewares that cause a frenzy.

Thanks to the power of social media groups, often created by like-minded mums after a bargain, hot ticket items pictured in catalogues and media releases are often destined to sell-out before they’ve barely hit the shelves.

And that’s exactly what happened when word got out that BIG W was restocking and adding to the collection of adorable animal ottomans that sold out earlier this year.

As shelves of BIG W stores across the country this week receive new stock of the lion and cow options, as well as the original elephant, dinosaur and unicorn ottomans shoppers have taken note. In less than 24 hours, groups like the BIG W Mums Australia Facebook Group have already exploded with news of the restock of the ottomans which retail at $49.

“OMG! So cute!,” said one mum, with another replying “do you think we need one at work?”

But perhaps most indictive of the frenzy was the poster who caps lock yelled: “OMG I AM GETTING THESE DONT EVEN FIGHT ME!”

And fighting might not be that much of a stretch. Things have been known to get pretty heated when items have gone viral like this.

Commenting on the new range, Monique Yourallis, BIG W Category Manager stated “we have decided to expand the range of the ottomans due to their huge popularity last time.

“Customers have previously requested a cow option, and we’ve heard them loud and clear! We’ve also added a lion option to jump on the trending theme of Kids Jungle rooms, with the new Lion King movie coming out soon. Last time, the triceratops and unicorn sold out within 4 days, so we expect stock to move quick.”
