A 52-year-old mother is still adamantly defending her choice to breastfeed her six-year-old daughter, despite claiming she’s been called a “paedophile” because of it.
Byron Bay mother, Maha al Musa, shared her story with Woman’s Day a few weeks ago, garnering international attention for her decision to continue breastfeeding her daughter, Aminah, even though she’s already six years old.
But despite the criticism she gets on a daily basis, Maha is still sticking to her guns.
“So many people commenting on breastfeeding an older child as “wrong”. In their comments they keep saying ‘Oh I support breastfeeding a baby or toddler BUT an older child is wrong,’” writes Maha on her Facebook page, “Well hang on a minute!!! You can’t have it both ways – you either support breastfeeding or you don’t?”
“Let’s support the feminine/mothering/parenting, CHOICE, breastfeeding and MORE – ITS TIME THE SHAMING STOPS!!!” she continues, “I am pleased to say that despite the negative comments on my breastfeeding story … this time around more women are standing in their truth and educating and sharing with those whom attack.”
Since her Woman’s Day debut, the mother-of-three has appeared on Morning Shows and 9’s Inside Story, advocating for extended breastfeeding until the “natural weaning age”, which she believes to be around seven or eight-years-old.
And although Maha maintains that she has no intention of stopping if her daughter is still comfortable, she has recently revealed that her six-year-old might be cutting back because she is beginning to lose her baby teeth.
“My daughter a couple of weeks ago said she felt ready to stop breastfeeding but only maybe do it at night ……!!” wrote Maha, “I told her to do what works for her …..and I fully support her decision…….this week she has 4 loose teeth!!”
“She has been breastfeeding at night sometimes for just a minute or two and other nights a little longer and occasional no breastfeeding … And in a few months she will be 7 … how interesting that the natural wean age often corresponds with teeth loss and the age of 7-8???”
The 52-year-old previously revealed that she visits Aminah at school every day to breastfeed her in front of the other students.
