Get crafty and make this easy DIY Father’s Day card

Forget the store bought card, what Dad will really appreciate on his special day is a card that’s made with some paint, glue, cardboard and hefty dose of creativity.

It might be just the introduction you need to kick-start a passion for paper crafting because if you didn’t already know, this humble hobby is currently undergoing a revival across Australia.

In October over 2,000 people are expected to attend a paper craft show in Melbourne to take classes, watch craft demonstrations, and buy crafting supplies.

With Father’s Day fast approaching, Michelle Brown, Creative Director of From Picture to Page and Beyond, shares this step-by-step guide to creating a DIY card, the big fella will love.

The From Picture to Page and Beyond paper craft show runs from October 11-13, 2019.

You’ll need these materials:

New kitchen sponge and scissors

A4 paper or A5 cardboard

Paints – three shades of blue and paintbrushes

Paint palette or old plate

Extra card and pen for sentiment

Glue stick

STEP 1

STEP 1: Fold A4 paper into half and half again; open up the sheet of paper. stamp in bottom right hand corner.

STEP 2

STEP 2: Use scissors to cut sponge into triangles.

STEP 3

STEP 3: Put paint onto palette. Dampen sponge and apply paint. Dab onto palette to spread paint evenly.

STEP 4

STEP 4 Stamp three to five times onto the bottom right hand corner of the paper. Move your shape around and stamp some off the edge.

This helps create movement and interest in your design. (Tip: Put scrap paper underneath the card to stop getting paint onto table).

STEP 5

STEP 5: Choose next triangle shape and colour; repeat steps 3 and 4 with next colour. Repeat again with third colour. Leave card aside to let paint to dry.

STEP 6

STEP 6: Cut a 8cm x 8cm square from the extra paper. Rule lines with pencil.

STEP 7

STEP 7: Write out sentiment “Happy Fathers Day”. Here we added bubbles to the lines to give us a funky font. Rub off lines for sentiment and add to card front with glue stick

STEP 8

STEP 8: Ta-da! Your card is done. Keen for some extra crafty pro tips? Try these:

Add little extra interest, find some ribbon or string and wrap across front, securing on both sides with sticky tape on the back.

Create the sentiment on your computer, print and cut out.

Invest in a art stamp sentiment and ink.

Add a little of the darker paint or ink around the edges of your card to create a border.
