At 67, Steve Martin became a father for the very first time. While most women don’t have the option to wait until later in life to become a parent (we can blame menopause for that), the actor is thankful for the opportunity to raise a child now that he’s reached this next stage in his life.
“If I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father, because I would have misplaced my attention on my career,” he told AARP The Magazine in their June/July issue.
Reflecting on his own upbringing, he’s determined not to make the same mistakes he says his father made with him.
"I am very forthcoming with her, and it's great," he says. "She's giving me way more than I'm giving her."
The Father of the Bride star welcomed his baby girl, now four, with wife Anne Stringfield, 45, in 2013. He now joins the club of Hollywood’s latest bloomers.
In 2011, Robert DeNiro was 68 years old when he and his second wife welcomed their daughter, Helen Grace, via a surrogate.
The legendary Clint Eastwood was 66 when he became a first-time father to daughter Morgan with second wife Dina Ruiz.
And eight-time husband, Larry King, welcomed his fifth son, Cannon, at the ripe old age of 66 in 2000.
Steve’s sweet words come as ultimate oldie-but-goodie, George Clooney, 56, is set to become a first-time father to twins with wife Amal.
The actor spoke about his son and daughter’s impending arrival in a pre-recorded video message while presenting the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity in Yerevan, Armenia recently.
“I’m sorry that I can’t be with you all tonight in Yerevan, but I can say in all sincerity that I am with you in spirit … I really would have been there, but if I came there and my wife had twins while I was there, I could never come home,” he said to the audience.
We’re waiting with bated breath for the couple’s announcement, which is expected any day now.
