Entertaintment industry veteran Patti Newton has shared a heartbreaking update about her youngest granddaughter Perla, who was hospitalised over the weekend.

The 18-month-old, who is the youngest daughter of Lauren Newton and her husband, former Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh, wasn’t feeling well, so her family immediately called an ambulance and took her to hospital as a precaution.

Patti, 75, shared the update to her followers on Instagram on Sunday night, along with a confronting photo of medical professionals tending to little Perla.

“Perla wasn’t well, the ambulance guys were so wonderful as were the [sic] dr and nurses at the children’s Hospital. She home and taking it easy not serious, so lucky,” Patti wrote.

Lauren, who is currently pregnant with her sixth child and has been bed-bound in hospital for weeks due to complications with her pregnancy, was unable to take care of her daughter herself.

She thanked her “amazing” family and Victoria’s health workers for stepping in and taking care of Perla in her absence.

“Thanks to @ambulancevic and @rchmelbourne for looking after Perla so well. She is home and doing well now,” Lauren wrote on Instagram.

“So hard to not be with her but as usual my amazing family looked after her so well. I can’t wait to be able to cuddle her again.”

Some of Lauren’s 17,000 Instagram followers commented with their own similar stories, as well as their well wishes.

“Lauren I lived on a couch for six months with my first child incubating. Ended up at Frances Perry with my second for eight weeks on bed rest. It’s very difficult managing your family from a hospital bed. Everybody rings you and your issuing instructions to everyone from hospital on how things should run and what everyone should do. I understand your pain particularly when things happen with the other children. I hope Perla is OK,” one follower wrote.

Another commented: “I vividly remember having to stay in hospital long term with my third baby, and the mixed emotions that came with that. Some days were ok, some days were lonely, and some days I was plotting how to escape without being noticed. It’s all worth it in the end though. Sending love.”

Lauren replied jokingly: “Thank you. Matt calls my hospital bed command central 😂 luckily Frances Perry is such a wonderful hospital.”

Bert says he loves being a grandparent.

Patti and her husband Bert, 82, live in Melbourne just around the corner from Lauren, Matt and their children.

Lauren has previously revealed how her mum and dad are very hands-on grandparents and help out a lot with childcare duties.

“I can’t stop them!” Lauren told Now To Love in May last year.

“We live very close by and she helps me out. We were always together even before kids. We would do things everyday and it’s no different with the kids.

“There would be something wrong if a few days went by and they hadn’t seen Nanny and Poppy.”

The pair clearly relish their roles as grandparents.

And Bert has previously opened up about how much joy his grandchildren bring him.

“They wouldn’t realise it at the moment, but they have made this one of the happiest times of my life,” the 80-year-old told the Herald Sun in 2016,

“There is that old saying, the wonderful thing about being a grandfather, or grandparent, is that you give the kids back. But in the case of Patti and myself, we don’t want to.”

Wishing Perla a speedy recovery!
