Plenty of dads around the country help their kids wrap a present and write a card for Mother’s Day, but what happens when there’s no dad in the house?
Michelle Bridges is among the millions of single Australian mums who will be soaking up the love from their kids this weekend, but she gets showered with affection from son Axel, six, on the daily.

(Image: Instagram)“I feel very blessed. It’s so corny but I feel like it’s Mother’s Day for me every day,” she tells Now To Love exclusively.
“I get to wake up with my son every day and he tells me he loves me every day, he hugs me, kisses me and calls me mumma … I’m his everything and he’s mine.”
Though she shares Axel with her former partner, Steve ‘The Commando’ Willis, Michelle says she and her son are “in each other’s lives 100 per cent”.

She explains: “I want to be a hands-on mum, I’ve always wanted that for myself.
“I didn’t have a child at the age of 45 to not be hands-on, [but] I’m not making any judgement on anybody else because everyone is different.”
The 51-year-old currently juggles single motherhood with her business and public life, making sure to mix in plenty of workouts, which serve as her ‘me time’.
Michelle adds that while there’s nothing that could take her away from those things, she knows it’s hard for many single mums to find balance.

(Image: Instagram)“I think for anyone that’s doing it themselves, it is really important to take the time to look after yourself,” she says.
“And it’s not always easy when you don’t have family nearby, which I don’t. So, it’s really [about] carving out that moment that’s just for you.”
Whether it’s mediation, cooking, or a simple walk, she urges other single mums to prioritise their own wellbeing so that they can show up for their children as a “happy parent”.
When Mother’s Day rolls around, Michelle will be one of the happiest mums in town as she gets to spend it with her favourite person in the world, Axel, adding: “I’m the luckiest girl in town.”
