The 80-year-old model challenging views on ageing

Wang Deshun’s bare-chested torso is popping up everywhere again with news that the catwalk model has just celebrated becoming an octogenarian.

Last year Wang Deshun stripped down to pants and strutted his almost 80-year-old stuff along a catwalk in China for Fashion Week.

Today with news he’s just celebrated his 80th birthday with a dance party he DJ-ed at, photos of his rocking body have set the internet on fire again.

The New York Times has written a story about “China’s hottest grandpa”, his recent birthday, how he stays in shape and his quest to reshape China’s and the world’s views on ageing.

“One way to tell if you’re old or not is to ask yourself, ‘Do you dare try something you’ve never done before?’ ” he said in a recent interview.

“Nature determines age, but you determine your state of mind,” he said.

Here are some of the pictures of Wang Deshun posted by his legion of social media fans (by the way, in China he’s referred to as “old fresh meat”, which is less insulting than it sounds).

Wang Deshun says staying active physically and mentally is vital to keeping in shape. He follows this daily routine.

“Morning is my learning time,” he told The New York Times. “I read books and news. From 3 to 6pm is my exercise time, in a gym near my home.”

He still swims about 800 metres every day as well.

As for diet, the main changes he’s made is that he drinks less alcohol now. Otherwise he eats what he wants.
