Eight-year-old boy burned after remote controlled car explodes

An eight-year-old Sydney boy has been burned after his remote controlled car exploded in his face.

An eight-year-old boy has suffered horrific burns to his chest and arms after his remote controlled toy car exploded.

Omar Awad was playing with his ethanol-fulled car in the backyard of his Sydney home around 10pm, when the car spontaneously burst into flames, engulfing him in the process.

Omar’s father, Khalid, revealed to 9News that he rushed to his backyard after hearing “terrible screams”.

“I found my wife and a couple of visitors just screaming, and I ran to the backyard and found fire on my son’s body,” Mr Awad told 9News.

Running into his backyard, Omar’s father saw his son on fire, and attempted to put the fire out by rolling him on the ground.

After the fire was extinguished, Omar was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with serious burns to his chest, stomach, arms and hands.

Omar has already undergone several operations, including skin grafts to treat the burns.

“He was talking to me. He was saying, ‘sorry Dad, sorry’,” Mr Awad said of his son’s injuries.

“I said to him, ‘you’re not sorry, I am the one who should be sorry, I should be with you all the time’”.
