Two more mums burnt in Thermomix explosions

Two Australian mothers have been badly burned when their Thermomixes exploded in two separate incidents.

Adelaide mum-of-four Tennille Pooley was left with second degree burns after her pricey all-in-one cooking device malfunctioned, spewing boiling hot liquid all over her kitchen.

It wasn’t the first time Tennille had experienced problems with her Thermomix but she was still stunned by the incident.

“I’m really, really lucky and grateful that I didn’t actually burn the kids,” she told 7 News. “I’d actually previously replaced the green lid seal… and unfortunately it’s happened again.”

Another Adelaide mother, who wanted to remain nameless, told a similar story to the TV network. She spent two days in hospital after she sustained serious burns while cleaning her device.

“It blew up in my face … I had burns on my face, particularly on my nose and my mouth and I had burns to my eyes and my hands, arms and chest,” she said.

It’s the third time Thermomix has been blamed for causing burns in the past two weeks. Perth mother Danika Jones sustained second degree burns to her chest, stomach and arms after her Thermomix burst open while she was cooking dinner.

It is understood all three women owned the older TM31 model Thermomix.

Thermomix initially raised concern about sealing rings on some TM31 models in 2014, saying that in rare circumstances: “There was a possibility that hot contents may splash out of the mixing bowl in some instances. This could lead to a scald and/or burn.”

“As soon as this issue was detected, we identified the relevant production period and asked potentially affected customers to replace their grey sealing ring with a new green sealing ring as a precautionary measure,” a statement on the Thermomix website reads.

In November 2015, the issue was found to extend to “a very small number” of appliances produced after May 2014.

“To ensure that your Thermomix TM31 operates safely, all appliances with a service number within the range 124231XX – 143231XX must only be operated with a green sealing ring,” the statement reads.

“As a precautionary measure, if you purchased your Thermomix TM31 after May 2014, you will be sent a new green sealing ring. When you receive the new green sealing ring, please replace your current grey sealing ring with the new green one, or a green sealing ring that you may have received previously. The green sealing ring increases the lid’s closing force in order to provide a more secure fit.”
