Sydney traffic MAYHEM as police try to coax man down from Sydney Harbour Bridge

The man has moved about the structure and his motives for the act remain unclear.

A man wearing headphones has climbed up into the steel cage of the Sydney Harbour Bridge at 4:30 am this morning. The man has moved about the structure and his motives for the act remain unclear.

Police have been forced to close four or five northbound lanes and two southbound lanes in the area as they continue their efforts to try and speak with the man and coax him down.

NSW Police have advised that drivers “please observe & obey all traffic signs / directions & monitor http://www.livetraffic.com for updates.”

“Continue to stay away from all approaches to the bridge due to ongoing police operation.”

David Wright from the Traffic Management Centre told ABC news that motorist will have to be patient as it does not look like the issue will be resolved quickly.

“It’s basically going to throw peak into chaos for anyone coming into the Sydney CBD,” he told reporters.

“If you are travelling into the CBD whether it’s from the upper north shore, the lower north shore, the northern beaches, the inner west — you will be delayed significantly due to this major problem on the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” he advised.

At this stage, train services on the North Shore Line and Northern Lines continue to run as normal over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and are not affected by the police operation.
