The new King, 46, was joined by his wife – the new Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia, who watched him swore an oath at a ceremony in Parliament.

King Felipe VI received the royal sash from his father, Juan Carlos, 76, at the Zarzuela Palace near Madrid. Juan Carlos formally abdicated the throne on Wednesday.

Like the Duchess of Cambridge, Queen Letizia has been embraced by the public because of her commoner roots. She previously worked as a journalist before taking on royal duties.

Together with Queen Letizia, monarchists are hoping King Felipe VI will bring forth a new era for the Spanish royal family. He called for “a new Spain that we will build together”.
