Ben, a 30-year-old bull elephant, appeared to be wounded when he walked himself up to the Bumi Hills Safari Lodge in Kariba, Zimbabwe to ask for help.

When he arrived, the in-house vet had left for the weekend so another vet kindly flew 320km to assist him.

While he waited, Ben calmly passed the six-hour wait by staying no more than a few metres from the house.

When the vet did arrived, Ben was tranquillised and it was found that he had a large wound in his shoulder along with two bullet holes in his ear thought to be from a poacher’s bullet.

Fortunately, the vet and workers were able to clean and disinfect Ben’s wound and administer a tracking collar to monitor his recovery.

While The Bumi Hills Foundation is confident Ben will make a full recovery, they’ve started a #HELPBEN campaign to raise the funds needed for his care.
