Republican spin doctor faces backlash for criticism of Obama’s daughters

Elizabeth Lauten, who is the communications director for Republican Representative Stephen Fincher, has faced backlash for her damning Facebook comments on the fashion and attitude of Barack Obama’s daughters during a ceremony at the White House for Thanksgiving.

Malia and Sasha stood behind their father and US President last week as he issued the annual Thanksgiving turkey “pardon”, saving two birds from the dinner table.

Shortly after, Ms Lauten wrote a Facebook post about their attitude and accused the first daughters, who are aged just 16 and 13, of dressing as if they were heading to a bar.

“I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family – try showing a little class,” she wrote in the post. “At least respect the part you play.” She added: “Then again, your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department.”

The post, which drew criticism from many, was later deleted and Ms Lauten issued an apology.

“After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents and rereading my words online, I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were,” she said.

The spin doctor also said she had judged the two girls in a way that she would never have wanted to be judged as a teenager.
