Oscar Pistorius jailed for maximum of five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp

Athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to a maximum of five years' jail for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year on Valentine's Day.

The South African double amputee sprinter was found guilty of culpable homicide last month.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said she had “considered all the evidence” and “weighed in all the relevant factors” before sentencing him to five years behind bars.

On the second charge of violating the firearms act, Judge Masipa sentenced him to three  years (wholly suspended).

There are now media reports that Pistorius will only serve 10 months in prison.
