One year ago a sea of flowers covered Martin Place following the Sydney Siege, and now they are the inspiration behind a permanent memorial to be constructed there.
NSW Premier Mike Baird announced the design of the memorial on the one year anniversary of the tragedy, explaining on Sunday morning it would pay tribute to not only the two lives that were lost, but the survivors also.
“I said at the time that Katrina and Tori would be in our hearts forever and they will be,” Mr Baird said.
“At the same time we never want to forget how we saw the city and state come together.
“My hope is on that day we focus in on what brought us together rather than those forces that tried to drive us apart.”
Professor Richard Johnson designed the memorial – which does not have a set construction date – which he described as “quietly reflective”.
“It has both a human scale and a civic scale. It has a personal dimension and a more public dimension.”
Floral cubes will be scattered into the pavement of Martin Place in a “starburst pattern”.
