The professor supporting new mums who have to bring their babies to class

The world needs more people like this.

A new mother, and her university cohort, have been left stunned at the kind actions of their university professor during their class yesterday.

When a mum in Dr Sydney Engelberg’s organisational behaviour lecture became embarrassed trying to leave the room and soothe her crying baby, Dr Engelberg picked up the child and soothed it.

In an image now going viral, Dr Engelberg, 67, is seen continuing to teach the packed auditorium, with the baby, now relaxed, on his hip.

Dr Engelberg’s daughter, Sarit Fishbaine, wrote alongside the image, “The mom stood up to leave with the crying infant, but instead Engelberg took the baby in his arms, calmed it down, and continued the class as if nothing had happened.”

Fishbaine also told Buzzfeed News that her dad was very supportive of new mothers in his class, so he wouldn’t have thought twice about picking up the distressed child and continuing teaching. She says he always allows female students to breastfeed and bring in their kids to lectures, so they do not have to choose between an education and parenting.

“There’s a lot of young moms and a lot of them have babies, and he encourages them to just bring their babies to class,” she said.

“My dad just loves kids and loves babies, he has five grandchildren, so he just takes the baby,” Fishbaine told BuzzFeed News. “He’s the one that’s in motion, he’s walking around the class. So he just takes the baby and continues teaching.”

“The way he sees the concept of getting education is not only learning the dry facts that you need to learn in class,” Fishbaine added, “but also learning values. And that’s the very important message that my dad wants to endow to the world.”

Bravo Dr Engelberg. On behalf of women everywhere may we just say: the world needs a whole lot more of you.
