Man pours bleach down partner’s throat in domestic violence attack

A man in NSW has been charged with domestic violence offences after allegedly pouring bleach down his partner's throat.

A 39-year-old man will face Waverly Local Court today after he allegedly poured bleach down his partner’s throat at their home in Sydney’s east earlier this week, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Charged with domestic violence offences, the man is accused of seriously injuring his 37-year-old partner at their unit in Maroubra on Monday.

Police said the pair became involved in an argument during which the man allegedly pushed his female partner to the floor and forcibly poured bleach down her throat.

The woman was treated for chemical burns to her throat and is undergoing continuing treatment at Prince of Wales Hospital.

The man allegedly fled his home after the violent incident on Monday night, but was arrested in Maroubra on Wednesday morning after police spotted him walking along Boyce Road.

After being taken to Maroubra Police station he was charged with reckless wounding and using poison to inflict grievous bodily harm.

So far this year 77 women have been killed by violence in Australia. A documentary airing next week on the ABC will ask if men who cause their partners and families harm can ever change. You can read our story about this important question here.
