Today Show host Karl Stefanovic was caught in a terrifying panic on the streets of Paris when locals set off a round of firecrackers imitating the sound of gunfire.

The Australian host was reporting live from the streets of Paris following the recent series of attacks which took over 120 lives, when the crowd reacted to hearing what sounded like ‘gunfire’.

After hearing the bangs, the crowd erupted into chaos, fleeing in every direction, fearing another attack.

Stefanovic, reacting to the crowd, also took off, running down the street with his cameraman, as police with rifles advanced down the road.

After the panic cleared, the news host resumed his broadcast from the streets.

“This is how quickly things can turn on the streets of Paris at the moment,” said Karl.

“French police, as you can see, are taking absolutely no chances,” he said.

Stefanovic is currently in Paris to report on the attacks.
