NZ PM John Key resigns

John Key has handed in his shock resignation as the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

John Key has resigned as Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The PM told a stunned press conference, and Facebook live audience, that he is leaving on his own terms, stepping down from the job to spend more time with his family after almost a decade in the role.

“This is the hardest decision I’ve ever made, and I don’t know what I’ll do next,” Mr Key said.

Mr Key reportedly told the cabinet earlier this morning ahead of his conference.

Key said that sometimes politicians stay too long and “ten years at the top is a long time.”

Despite saying he never really considered himself a “career politician”, Key first entered NZ parliament in 2002 and lead his party to election victories in November 2008, 2011 and 2014.

“I’ve never wanted my success to be measured by how long I’ve spent in Parliament,” he said.

The PM, who will reportedly officially hand over power on December 12, said his stepping down was partially to help make way for new talent and ensure his successor gets a good start.

“Whoever the caucus selects will have my unwavering support.”

Mr Key plans on staying on in the backbench until he figures out his next move.

The next NZ election would be held in November 2017.
