Gladys Berejiklian has been elected leader of the NSW Liberal party

Gladys Berejiklian has been elected, unopposed, as the leader of the NSW Liberal party.

The meeting happened this morning, four days after Mike Baird’s shock announcement he’s retiring from politics.

Ms Berejiklian, who was Mike Baird’s deputy and state treasurer, was the only person to put her hand up for the top job.

Finance minister Dominic Perrottet was elected deputy Liberal leader.

Ms Berejiklian will be formally sworn in as NSW Premier at a ceremony at Government House and is expected to hold her first media conference as leader later this morning.

She will become the first female Coalition premier and just the second for the state.

It’s thought she’ll revisit some of Mike Baird’s more controversial policies, including forced council amalgamations.
