Former big-time Apple engineer rejected from a job application at the Genius Bar

The Apple retiree's case has highlighted the discrimination faced by older people in the workforce.
Apple Genius Bar

He might have been responsible for migrating Apple’s Mac OS to Intel processors (which is no mean feat in the world of software engineering) during his time at the company. But JK Scheinberg’s experience apparently didn’t mean much when it came to his job application at the Genius Bar.

Having spent 21 years working for Apple as a high-level engineer, JK left in 2008 but wanted to find work to keep himself busy and avoid boredom in his retirement. So he naturally thought the Genius Bar, where people go to have their Apple-related woes fixed (sometimes), would be the ideal place for someone with his knowledge.

“On the way out, all three of the interviewers singled me out and said: ‘We’ll be in touch’. I never heard back,” the Apple veteran told the New York Times.

JK probably never heard back because the Genius Bar is typically staffed by 20-something hipsters who take the “genius” part of their job title very seriously.

Meanwhile, the 54-year-old saw the humour in his situation, tweeting: “Wonder if Apple will finally give me callback on that genius bar interview.”

21 years of Apple knowledge wasn’t enough to get JK Scheinberg hired at the Genius Bar
