Elderly couple call 999 because they are lonely

A kind police officer recently answered an emergency of a different kind.

This story is going to break your heart.

An elderly woman, Dora Thompson, 95, called police in Britain on Tuesday, because she was lonely.

So a couple of constables went over and had a cup of tea with Dora and her husband, Fred, who is 95, and blind.

Fred told some of his old war stories, and Dora talked about what life was like during the Blitz, and it felt so good to have some company.

Britain’s Telegraph reports that when Dora called the equivalent of Triple O with no specific complaint, police though it best to send somebody over, just in case.

“The call was answered by Police Constable Stu Ockwell, who has now become something of a social media hero,” The Telegraph says.

Constable Ockwell called on the couple, and “what we found was a lovely elderly couple who were caring for each other, probably finding it a bit difficult to care for each other with their ailments and their age, and that were in need of a bit of company if anything.”

PC Ockwell said: “We spent half an hour with them, put on the kettle whilst Fred told us the stories of when he was in the war. He’s an amazing character and had us in fits of laughter and to me it made my day.”

“They have good support from neighbours,’ he added.

PC Ockwell added: ‘We’ve had some flak over it but they’re a 95-year-old couple. We attended over a concern for their welfare.’

Fred Thomson said he was thrilled that the officer took time to chat.

He said: “It’s a change to have somebody to talk to, somebody different. I was very pleased.”
