A New South Wales woman has been charged with “a number” of offences, including driving with drugs in her system and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm, after allegedly hitting a two-year-old with her car in the Hunter Valley.

The incident took place on Saturday night, as the 22-year-old woman arrived at the toddler’s house to pick up her own three-year-old child.

The two-year-old sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital for surgery, Seven News reports.

A NSW police inspector called the accident “tragic.”

“(It’s) one of those instances where it’s just a very tragic and sad accident,” the Inspector told reporters.

The woman is said to be appearing in Maitland Local Court on March 28.
