Drones to protect Aussie beaches from sharks

The drones will transmit images from the water back to the beach. They aren’t meant to replace helicopter surveillance.

Drones will be employed to keep an eye on Australian beaches this summer, in an effort to prevent shark attacks.

Discovery magazine reports that the drones fly over popular swimming beaches, including Bondi.

The report says there have been 13 shark attacks in New South Wales this year, leaving one person dead and seven injured.

The drones will transmit images from the water back to the beach. They aren’t meant to replace helicopter surveillance. The tagging of sharks will also be stepped up, and NSW also plans to introduce “listening stations” to allow tagged animals to be monitored.
