Australian woman dies in Bali after drinking close to 30 vodka shots

The woman’s face and lips are said to have turned blue shortly before her death.

Summa Jean Simmonds, 38, died at the luxury Peppers Seminyak resort in Bali on Sunday night.

Indonesian police say the woman, from Cairns in Far North Queensland, had consumed a “whole bottle of vodka” – or around 21 drinks – before drinking another six shots later that evening.

The mother-of-five was travelling with two other women, aged 46 and 20, who tried unsuccessfully to revive her before a doctor and emergency services arrived, News.com.au reports.

She died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

North Kuta police crime section chief, Ika Prabawa, said investigations into cause of death were continuing and that a post mortem would be conducted once family approval had been provided.

“We are still investigating. Based on witnesses she drank vodka and when she came back to her villa she fainted and died,” Mr Prabawa said.

Police say Ms Simmonds consumed the alcohol while in a friends villa and returned to her own accommodation to pick up some money before heading out into the town.

She began to vomit at the front of her villa before fainting, where her pulse became weak and her face and lips turned blue.

A police search of the victim’s villa as well as her friend’s villa where she was drinking found empty bottles of vodka.

A locally-produced spirit called ‘arak,’ which has previously been linked to the deaths and serious injury of tourists in Bali and neighbouring islands, was not found.
