The father of AFL legend James Hird admits he was shocked to hear the news of his son’s suspected overdose.

The 43-year-old Brownlow medallist was rushed to hospital last week following reports of an ‘intentional poisoning overdose’ and was later transferred to a private facility.

In an interview with radio station 3AW, Allan said he had no idea about James’ rocky path to ill health.

“I had no inking; just out of the blue.”

When asked for an update on his son’s condition, he said James is recovering “fine” and that he would be visiting him in Melbourne soon.

“My daughter has been keeping me regularly informed on his condition,” he added.

Allan is adamant his son will be able to bounce back from this both mentally and professionally.

James was suspended from Essendon in August 2013 for a year following that infamous doping and supplements scandal. He quit as coach of Essendon Football Club in August 2015.

As yet no details have been confirmed about the exact cause of the suspected overdose.
