37 killed, 181 injured in twin suicide bombings in Lebanon

A statement allegedly released by ISIS has claimed responsibility.

Two blasts, which exploded in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, have killed 37 people and injured 181.

The twin explosions hit the suburb of Burj el-Barajneh, known as a strong hold of the Shia Hazbollah movement, and caused major damage to the streets.

A statement released purporting to be from the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, reports the BBC.

This attack comes after the conflict in Lebanon’s neighbouring country, Syria, continues to worsen with well over a million refugees fleeing into Lebanese suburbs.

The explosions were targeted at a stronghold of the Hezbollah movement, who have been essential in Syria’s official fight back against the so-called Islamic State.

Local police revealed that two suicide bombers caused the explosions. A third body was found at the site, but the explosives were not detonated.

In the wake of the attack, fears have arisen that Lebanon may now fall victim to Syria’s ongoing and horrifying conflict.
