Italian woman marries herself in a lavish ‘fairytale’ wedding

This woman won't sit back and wait for her Prince Charming to have her dream wedding.

An Italian woman has done what every single woman in the world wishes they could do; she has married herself in a ceremony that most couples could only dream of.

The wedding included four bridesmaids, 70 guests, a triple-tiered wedding cake and of course a stunning, strapless white wedding dress… the only thing missing from this fairy tale was a Prince.

The bride who brought all of our wedding dreams to life is 40-year-old fitness trainer, Laura Mesi. She’s the latest in a long line of men and women who are opting into a new self-marriage trend known as sologamy.

“I promised to love me all my life,” Laura told La Repubblica.

She’d always said that if she did not have the boyfriend by the time she was 40, she would do it herself.

“Here is my fairy tale without a prince,” she said.

Laura spent ‘just’ 10,000 euros on the wedding (the equivalent of AUD 14,961) and the 70 guests helped to cover the costs of the wedding lunch and even helped to pay for a honeymoon.

While her family was at first sceptical, once they understood her mission was about a self-love commitment, they eventually came around.

“Even my brother,” said Laura

“He was sceptical about my idea and instead ended up moving to accompany me to the celebrant.”

Laura’s ring was also bespoke for the occasion, two rings entwined as one.

A website called I Marry Me confirms that Laura is one of many.

“You Are Reason To Celebrate,” begins the website.

“A self-wedding is a symbolic ceremony–about reconnecting and staying connected with you. Wear the ring to remind you every day to LOVE YOURSELF. “

The website also sells self-wedding rings and explains the best way to go through with a ceremony.

The wedding has no religious or legal weight.
