The Australian Taxation Office has released its latest data on taxation for 2012-13 which details the personal income, charitable donations and highest-earning professions in Australia as well as pinpointing the tiny town in New South Wales that has earned the dubious distinction of being home to the nation’s lowest earners.

Delungra, which is located north-west of Sydney, has a population of 556 people and an average taxable income of $21,691 – more than eight times lower than the highest earning postcodes in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.

According to the ATO’s report, the highest mean taxable income of $177,514 was afforded to the 2027 region in Sydney which predictably includes the ritzy boroughs of Darling Point, Edgecliff, HMAS Rushcutters and Point Piper.

But in spite of their massive pay checks Sydney’s most affluent did lose out when it came to assessing which area was the most charitable. The nation’s capital, the ACT took out the honour of being the most generous with the tiny region’s annual donations averaging $261.

The ATO’s stats indicated that those in the medical community were the biggest earners with surgeons once again topping the list of occupations with the highest mean income, earning on average $361,202, closely followed by anaesthetists on $319,033.

In the report the ATO’s Second Commissioner, Andrew Mills said that while compiling the income information is a “significant undertaking” it is necessary to understand how Australian’s are faring across the board.

“It adds to our picture of the Australian community, showing the spread of taxable income across the county, sources of income and data about business and work-related expenses,” says Mr Mills.

Adding that the data is important for the improvement of “Australia’s taxation and superannuation systems and how they operate”.
