He did us proud! Guy Sebastian blew Europe away but, it won’t mean Australia will be back next year

2015’s Eurovision reminded us all why we love the song contest so much and after Guy Sebastian’s performance we were left feeling warm and fuzzy.

It was a show of epic proportions, even by Eurovision standards, and it earned Guy Sebastian a respectable fifth place, but it won’t mean we’ll be invited back next year.

Now that the confetti has been swept away, the empty cans of hairspray cleared and members of the audiences have boarded their Easyjet flights home, we finally have a chance to process just how incredible Eurovision was this year.

The 33-year-old wowed with his historic Tonight Again single, however Sweden was the worthy winner thanks to their contestant Mans Zelmerlow with his song Heroes.

Although Australia’s passion for Eurovision was reflected with Guy’s commendable fifth-place performance, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be invited back next year.

Sweden’s delegation head Christer Bjorkman told reporters, “It was fantastic having Australia here, they are such good people, they are friendly and indeed made this journey for us really good because we’ve become friends with them.”

He added: “It’s a shame in a way that they can’t be here next year.”

According to the Daily Mail, SBS Eurovision correspondent Sam Pang is tipping China as the next wildcard entry.

Although commentator Julia Zemiro believes Australia could make a return, “if Australia put in quite a lot of voting they might consider it,” she told reporters in Austria.

Lee Lin Chin also did us proud as our Eurovision spokesperson!

This year, Eurovision turned 60 and to commemorate the occasion and to thank Australia for our long-time support of the song contest we were invited to participate.

But the former Australian Idol winner wasn’t the only person from Down Under making an appearance, with fashionable and funny journalist Lee Lin Chin repping it as our spokesperson, telling Europe how we as nation voted, for the first time ever.

Of course, we gave our all important 12 points to the winner, Sweden.

We may not have won the contest but we won ourselves a continent full of friends and we think Guy said it best a tweet prior to his performance: “The phrase ‘music brings people together’ doesn’t get much more literal than this. Such a great positive vibe in the room.”

Thanks Europe for letting us participate, what a ride, what a contest, and what a show!
