Celebrating spring: good sparkling explained

Ready for warmer weather and lazy afternoon’s with a glass of bubbly? Us too. But which grape to enjoy?

Ready for warmer weather and lazy afternoon’s with a glass of bubbly? Us too. But which grape to enjoy?

Which wine should I have with white fish? Which is a dark palate and which is light? What’s the difference between ‘crisp’ finish and a ‘soft’ finish?!

Luckily, for those of us who just want to grab a glass of bubbly without having to worry about noses, colours and maturation time, Yellowglen has stepped in to answer a few questions about their range of sparkling wines.

Your wine shopping just got a whole lot easier.

RED

For those of us who want to go for a darker, richer flavour, Yellowglen’s ‘red’ is for you.

Described as ‘brooding’ and ‘daring’, the deep taste of this one relies on a harmony of ripe berry fruits including raspberry, plum and blackcurrant, various grape varieties and (best of all) a subtle hint of chocolate.

The red is best consumed young and chilled (aren’t we all?) and is ‘firm’ without being dry or overly sweet.

WHITE

The “easy-breezy” white sparkling wine is described as being “approachable” and “sweet”. Everything we want in a glass of bubbly. The fresh taste is balanced by sweet grapes, musk and a ‘touch of lemon curd’, which gives it a delicious light lemon colour.

Unlike the heavier flavours of red, white is a crisp taste which is designed almost as a palate cleanser – refreshing, light and clean.

YELLOW

Yellowglen’s signature “classically inspired” yellow sparkling is a close, yet distinguished cousin of the chardonnay and pinot noir, with a fresher, cleaner edge.

Based off notes of strawberries and cream, with melon, pineapple and citrus, the taste is fruity, but not overly sweet.

PINK

Yellowglen’s pink is as fun as it sounds. A delicate taste, with subtle flavours of strawberries, flowers and lemon, is a delightful balance of ‘elegance’ and ‘finesse’. Something we can definitely relate to.

The ice pink colour is due to the sweet berries and silky cream flavours that it’s based on. Pink also boasts a touch of lemon and lime.

Peacock Lane

If the bottle is anything to go off (and it is), the Peacock Lane sparkling wine by Samantha Willis is fun, elegant and a little fancy, making it the perfect addition to any party.

As vibrant as the peacock on the bottle, the ‘crisp’ taste is based of spices like nutmeg, roast almonds, apples, and lemon. A beautiful straw colour, Peacock Lane is a lingering flavour with a ‘poised’ and ‘complex’ taste.
