With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, some singles are getting ready to face the long, couples-infested weekend alone, dodging 50 Shades of Grey and boxed chocolates. But those who are looking for a date might find some luck looking at professions, rather than age or common interests.

A recent study by online dating app The Grade, a Tinder-style app that grades you based on your profile, popularity and message quality (and yes, you can get ‘expelled’ for poor grades), has found that matching with certain professions is best way to get lucky this weekend. According to the survey, you and your date’s job compatibility is likely to determine your luck in love, as well as who you choose to ‘like back’.

The careers favoured most highly by The Grade users include retail workers (they do have an extraordinary amount of patience), students (probably cheap dates) and doctors (we blame Grey’s Anatomy), with executives and investment bankers following close behind. The survey, calculated from over 450,000 ‘likes’ and ‘skips’ on the app, also identified the professions that were the least likely to hook up, salespeople were unlikely to get any love from accountants, nurses steer clear of executives, and bankers tend to avoid musicians.

And proving that sometimes opposites don’t attract, the study showed that doctors matched most frequently with other doctors, teachers were also likely to stick to their own and people working in art and design were unlikely to venture out of their own profession.

Unsurprisingly, fire fighters came out on top as the number one most desirable job for a date on The Grade. It could have something to do with those calendars they keep putting out.

More dating surveys from The Grade revealed that users, like Prince Charming, have the least luck matching up after the clock strikes midnight and that women are more likely to respond to simple, sincere messages, such as ‘Hi, how are you?’ and ‘Will you go to dinner with me?’, with most steering way clear of pick-up lines. Another survey showed that the most used emoji by single men onThe Gradewas the modest ‘OK Hand’ sign, ladies stuck to the classic ‘smiling face with smiling eyes’.

This Valentine’s Day might be the perfect opportunity to match with people working in your most compatible field, or, if you’re a traditionalist, see what the fuss is about in the most popular professions. We recommend the fire fighters.
