Wimbledon 2017 takes place from the 3 July until 17 July 2017.

The world’s favourite tennis championship is also celebrating its 140th birthday this year, which means only one thing… tennis mania is about to hit. It’s even today’s Google Doodle, so you know it’s big news.

Unless you want to be left out, you’ll need to a few basics for water cooler chit chat.

Here’s a handy little cheat sheet so you can join in the tennis chit chat while sipping Pimms and snacking on strawberries and cream.

The first Wimbledon took place in 1877 and was held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, where the game is still played today. It draws in a fantastic selection of celebrity and royal patronage who all have to adhere to a strict dress code. Celeb and royal spotting is all part of the fun of championship, so make sure you’re on the lookout

Out of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments that take place around the world annually, Wimbledon is the only significant tournament that is still played on outdoor courts.

The other Grand Slam tournaments are the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.

These days, Wimbledon is held on the first Monday of July and runs for two weeks. The most exciting part for many is the men’s and women’s single finals, which take place on the last Saturday and Sunday of the event.

The Championships 2017: Monday 3 July – Sunday 16 July

The Championships 2018: Monday 2 July – Sunday 15 July

The women’s final will be on Saturday, July 16, with the men’s final on Sunday, July 17.
