After 10 years of a debilitating wart virus, a Bangladeshi man dubbed “Tree Man” has undergone surgery to remove 5kg of bark-like warts from his hands and feet reports Mirror.

Abul Bajandar, 26, is being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors began by removing the smaller warts on just his right hand.

It is only the first of many for the man as doctors believe Bajandar will need another 15 operations in the next year before he is finished, but this does not deter the young father who is looking forward to finally being free of the virus that has consumed most of his hands and feet.

“The first operation has given me hope. I don’t want to return to my village without clearing my hands and feet. I want to get back to my old life,” he said.

The rare condition epidermodysplasia verruciformis was given the all clear for surgery once they ascertained it was not cancerous. The condition has rendered Bajandar unable to work, but he became somewhat of a celebrity in his village.

When the government offered to pay for treatment he opted to go for it, and to finally get his old life back.
