No they didn’t! The craziest fashion moments of 2017

Prepare to be amazed (or shocked)...

In a year where we have seen so much heartbreak and horror, it seems almost frivolous to be counting down the year’s craziest fashion looks.

But the fact is fashion is important. Fashion infiltrates every aspect of life, and not only that, it generates billions of dollars and provides millions of jobs.

Fashion, or style, does not need to be separate from politics. In fact, throughout history they have been inherently connected whether it be the purple, white and green coloured clothing of the suffragettes, or the red of communists, or even the yellow and gold that resonates with Australians all over the world.

Fashion is about art, history, culture and expressing yourself and so it is in these times when many of our personal freedoms are being threatened that counting down the year’s most bizarre (or perhaps more importantly self-expressive) looks is very important.

Rita Ora

You’d be right in thinking that Rita Ora looks ~flawless~ post-shower. However, you’d be wrong to think she’s all towelled up in a hotel room. Rita said R-I-P to what her red-carpet ward-robe used to be in this snuggly ensemble at the MTV Video Music Awards, leaving us equally perplexed and impressed. Like, who wouldn’t want to hang out in their cosiest clothes and look this glow-y. Yep, this is how she do…

Met Gala co-chair, Katy Perry, went all out wearing a Maison Margiela Artisanal custom gown by John Galliano channelling the Gala’s ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons’ theme.

Spanish actress, Victoria Abril, turned heads at the Cannes Film Festival this year where she wore a seemingly geisha-inspired outfit.

Nicki Minaj is known for her eccentric fashion choices and she certainly did not disappoint when she arrived at the VMAs wearing a pink Vex Latex bodysuit.

While Thandie Newton’s Monse dress paired with the floral headpiece is very OTT, the entire outfit arguably did fit the Gala’s theme honouring Commes des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo and her avant-garde designs.

Sarah Jessica Parker will always be a style icon due to her role as fashionista Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City and her role in real life slaying the red carpets but unfortunately this entire outfit from the white gloves to her crown braid does seem a bit out there.

Madonna may have been in camo but she definitely was not hiding from the spotlight. From her custom Moschino dress to the diamond grill in her mouth, this outfit is just another classic Madonna fashion moment to add to the books.

Queen of the Met Gala, Rihanna’s outfit this year did not disappoint. Rihanna rocked a Comme des Garcons number successfully nailing the night’s dress code.

Not quite as jaw-dropping as her 2010 VMA’s meat dress but Lady Gaga still stunned in this Alex Ulichny leather outfit.

Like many others on this list, Jared Leto is known for his bizarre outfits and as expected he delivered at this year’s VMAs. Leto arrived wearing a sequined green and blue Gucci cape with a pink floral turtleneck.

While most accessorise with a small clutch on the red carpet, Jaden Smith decided to go that one step further at this year’s Met Gala carrying a fistful of his once trademark, recently cut, dreadlocks.

Up and coming pop artist, Girl Crush, definitely stood out at this year’s Grammy Awards where she stepped out in a sparkly pink bralette and full skirt covered in what seemed to be bubblegum.

Actress Haley Bennett’s Dolce and Gabbana dress was not the most show-stopping piece of her outfit but rather it was her dramatic floral headpiece that she paired the dress with.

Showing off her edgy style, singer Halsey wore a floor-grazing khaki skirt from Juun. J paired with a white bra from Sergi Hudson to this year’s Billboard Awards.

Proving age is just a number, Cher, 71, performed her 1998 hit Believe in a nude bikini and beaded outfit.

Cher followed this with her 1989 smash If I Could Turn Back Time for which she stepped out in a black leotard, black wig and thigh-high black boots similar to the same outfit she wore in the song’s memorable video.

Unlike other models who wore their most skin-baring dresses, quirky model, Grace Hartzel, decided to head for the other extreme. Hartzel went all out for this year’s Comme des Garcons theme at the Met Gala where she sported OTT hair and makeup and Dior Haute Couture.

Helen Lasichanh, wife of co-chair of the night, Pharrell Williams, rocked head-to-toe Comme des Garcons in a bright red ensemble especially picked out for her by designer Rei Kawakubi herself at the Met Gala.

While her Lorraine Huntsinger dress may not necessarily be enough to earn her a spot on this list, Deborra-Lee Furness’ combination of fishnet stockings, socks and platform heels ensure her firm place here.

Richard Wilkins’ son Christian Wilkins and mate Andrew Kelly rocked the tartan trend on the ARIAs red carpet, but we’re not entirely convinced about the smudged lipstick…

Model-turned-actress Cara Delevigne rocked a new luxe hairstyle at this year’s Met Gala. Although we’re not sure if you can call it a hairstyle or piece of art since Delevigne “hair” is bedazzled silver paint. Whatever you call it, we are here for it.

CeeLo Green’s bizare gold get-up is what meme dreams are made of, but apparently this is what we should expect from him from now on. CeeLo is undergoing artistic reinvention. So, ladies and gentlemen, we present you ‘Gnarley Davidson’ – CeeLo’s new edgy alter ego.

If anyone can pull off this glittering Alexander Wang catsuit, it’s Bella Hadid. The 21-year-old model rocks this avant-garde look (perfect for the night’s dress code) and we’re sure in a purely coincidental manner, it was the first event Hadid attended where her ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd, and his then girlfriend, Selena Gomez, would also be in attendance.
