Trooping the colour...ful outfits: The best royal looks from Britain's most iconic parade over the years

Immortalising the event in its own right.

By Jess Pullar
Whenever June rolls around each year, there are several things we immediately think of.
Our winter wardrobes (for obvious reasons), the fact that we're already half-way through the year (again, for despairingly obvious reasons) and, of course, one of the biggest events on the royal calendar - Trooping the Colour.
Oh yes, a day that serves up a healthy dose of pomp, fanfare and a royal spectacle - from the very balcony of Buckingham Palace, no less - this is always going to be a day we none blue-blooded folk will gladly flock to feast our eyeballs on.
And there's one overriding element to the day's events that always keeps us on our toes - the outfits.
Held in honour of the Queen's birthday every year, the annual event occurs at Buckingham Palace and takes place before a regal procession of horse-drawn carriages, many of which host the royal family members themselves as they make their way into the location.
Then comes the iconic flyover, which coincides with the moment the entire royal family step out onto the balcony together to watch, and wave to onlookers.
Over the years, the event has seen many a colourful moment - and we're not just talking about Prince George's hilarious displays or Prince Louis' frantic wave (never forget that 2019 spectacle...).
Oh yes, the outfits are what truly put the cherry on top of the fun-filled day.
Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was subject to a scaled down Trooping, featuring just the Queen making a mini appearance from her isolation spot of choice, Windsor Castle.
This year, the same will occur once again, with the Monarch set to view a miniature spectacle from a safe distance.
That said, the Palace has already confirmed the event will be back in all its glory in 2022 as COVID-19 restrictions will hopefully have eased enough by then. It will also coincide with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
And until then, we're taking comfort in the fact that we've seen enough brilliant Trooping the Colour outfits to last us a lifetime.
