What that little pocket in your jeans is really for

Besides being really nonfunctional.
What that little pocket in your jeans is really for

Ever wondered why jeans have that tiny fake pocket on one side?

It’s certainly too small for coins to be easy accessible (ever tried?) and have been around long before smart phones – so why do they exist?!

Apparently, the pocket is a “watch pocket.”

According to a Quora forum, Levis introduced the pockets to cater for cowboys’ pocket watches.

“Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcosts,” it says on the forum. “To keep them from getting broken, Levis introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch.”

Levis confirmed this fun fact on its website: “Originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name, this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few.”

There you have it. Another one of life’s little mysteries solved.
