The only thing more fashionable than race-day style is, well, royals wearing race-day style – and Royal Ascot is exhibit A, B and C.

As the prestigious racing event gets underway for 2019, we’ve already seen some jaw-dropping outfits that have wowed us with their chic sophistication.

For starters, let’s take a look at Kate Middleton, who provided a rip-roaring start to the festivities by wearing a heavenly blue Elie Saab number that had us revelling in all its princess-perfect fairy tale-worthy glory.

And that was just the beginning!

So why is Royal Ascot more of a fashion spectacle compared to other royal-worthy events?

Well, for many, there’s nothing quite like the intrigue behind the strict royal rules our favourite members of the British elite must follow for the glamorous affair.

A strict dress code applies for all men and women in attendance.

For the ladies, dresses must be worn either just above or below the knee. In addition, dress straps must be a least 2.5cm thick (bye bye, spaghetti straps!).

Meanwhile, a headpiece which has a solid base of 10cm or more in diameter (nothing less!) is acceptable.

For men, socks and black shoes are compulsory, as well as a waistcoat complete with a tie. Black or grey top hats are also given the thumbs up.

With such a strict dress code in mind, it’s no wonder the royal fashions on the field look so incredibly schmick – and 2019’s event is no different.
