Last year, we stayed home and wore activewear on rotation. As we’ve re-emerged from iso days back into our social and work lives, it’s time to put the yoga pants away (at least, for a few days of the week) and get dressed again, even if it’s still partly for Zoom meetings.

The temperature is dropping, and it’s time to pack away the summer linens and reach for the knitwear, cosy scarves and overcoats. And there’s no reason why we can’t look great and be comfortable at the same time.

There’s a lot to love about autumn and winter when it comes to fashion, from rugging up in soft, woollen layers, classic coats and investing in a new pair of boots that just seem to go with everything.

To avoid the dreaded morning ritual of starting into your wardrobe and not knowing what to wear, these five key pieces will up your style game every day of the week.

The chunky knitted jumper

Knitwear is a winter must – and chunky knitted jumpers have our sartorial attention this season. It’s a piece that has just as much style cred on the catwalk as the couch – if the fashion weeks’ of late are anything to go by. You’ll find colourful options at Gorman, or basics in multitudes of colours at Uniqlo and Kmart – perfect for cosy weekends at home. Try: Woodlands Poncho, $249.00 from Gorman.

The signature boot

A quality pair of boots is a smart investment to make at the beginning of autumn. The boots from ECCO’s new Shape collection give a nod to the square-toed and wedge styles of 1970s and 1990s that is so on-trend right now.

They’ll go with just about anything, from party dresses to jeans and are genuinely comfortable, thanks to a specially-designed cushioning, stabilising and rebound technology that is built into the sole. They’re made from butter-soft, yet durable leather from ECCO’s own sustainably-managed tanneries and their flattering styles will pull any outfit together with ease.

The printed midi-dress

Let’s not forget that bold prints are not just for summer, a patterned midi dress is a great way to enliven your outfit of the day. We’re taking inspiration from mum and actress, Chloë Sevigny who has mastered this look. Neutral, paisley or dark floral print patterns are perfect for autumn, and look especially smart when paired with a pair of boots (ankle or knee-high), or with a jacket over the top when it really cools down.

The wide-leg trousers

Give your skinny jeans a break this season and opt for breathable, wide-leg trousers or culottes. These have the polish of a professional outfit, but offer comfort at the same time. Marks & Spencer has some great neutral options, as does Assembly Label. Pair with a slouchy boyfriend shirt, or a fitted blazer and scoop-neck tank to look smart wherever your day may take you, come rain or shine.

The classic coat

When in doubt, a tailored coat adds instant polish to your outfit and the kind of Duchess Catherine finesse that never fails to look smart. Dress it down with jeans, a white t-shirt and sneakers, or dress up with a silky blouse or collared shirt and tailored pants.

There are so many styles to choose from, and it’s really a question of personal style which colour, cut or pattern you go for. However there are some great winter-appropriate versions made from heavier fabrics, from the likes of Zara, Country Road and Witchery that offer warmth and afford ease of movement, too. Try: Atmos&Here, Vanessa wool blend coat, $149.99, from The Iconic.
