Eight new Australian celebrities will take us on a very personal journey when SBS’ Who Do You Think You Are? returns this April.

Delving into their rich ancestry this year are Australian personalities, Noni Hazlehurst, Patti Newton, Todd McKenney and Justine Clarke.

They will be joined by Charlie Teo, John Jarratt, Ernie Dingo and Natalie Imbruglia.

Charlie Teo will confront painful parts of his ancestry.

The series, adapted from the British version of the same name, has previously seen the likes of TV WEEK Logie award winners Rebecca Gibney, Asher Keddie and Rove McManus open up and break down as they’re confronted by the details of their families’ past.

“Some of the reluctance to look back in my history has been my wanting to disown my Chinese ancestry…racism that I experienced made me hate being Chinese,” says Charlie Teo, whose episode is second in the eight-part series.

“I would like to identify as an Irish Catholic Russian Jew…I mean that’s a good combination,” says Justine Clarke.

Once again, the show will take the stars and us at home around the world – from Belarus and Russian to Malaysia and Singapore – as we follow the trail of their ancestry.

“[We] uncover surprising and unlikely tales of child stars performing in 19th Century India, working class heroes fighting battles against Napoleon and how the fall of the iron curtain divided a family,” the press release reads.

“One performer discovers stories of romance and heartbreak in her family of travelling acrobats, while another’s unknown ties to Chinese ancestry is revealed, and another participant is shocked to learn of a dark family secret involving infanticide.”

Season nine of Who Do You Think You Are? premieres on SBS on Tuesday 17 April, 7.30 pm.
