Coping with the loss of a loved one is never easy. So when Brock Ashby lost his mother to pancreatic cancer when he was 12, his childhood came crashing down.

“I remember when Mum told me she only had three months to live,” The Voice hopeful tells TV WEEK.

“And then being at school and getting the call to say she had passed away. As a kid, it was so hard.”

Heartbroken and confused, Brock decided to express his emotions by writing a song for his mum called “We Never Wanted You To Go”.

“I had so much I wanted to say to her, but I didn’t know how to say it,” the 24-year-old recalls. “So I wrote a song and sang it at her funeral. It was the first time I’d ever sung in public.”

It was in this moment that Brock’s passion for music and singing ignited.

“Singing became a release and a way of dealing with Mum not being around anymore,” he explains.

Brock hopes to make his mum proud when he steps on stage for his blind audition.

“Because I never got to sing to Mum, every time I do, I think about that and imagine I’m singing to her for the very first time,” he says.

“I don’t know what she would say if she saw me today, but I just hope she’s proud of me.”

Brock has been singing since he was 12 years old.

As for his blind audition, Brock admits he was a nervous wreck.

“I really wanted Kelly [Rowland] to turn around,” he reveals. “I’ve always been a big fan of hers. To have her listening to me was a dream come true.”

There’s no doubt girls will be swooning when Brock’s audition airs this week. So is the handsome body transformation coach single?

“Yes,” he laughs. “But for now, I’m focused on my career and singing.”

Sorry, ladies!
