Phryne Fisher – who was expertly played by Essie Davis for three seasons of the ABC TV series – is heading to the silver screen for the upcoming feature film Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.

Filming will begin in Morocco and Melbourne in October 2018, though the movie will be set in ‘London’ and ‘Palestine.’

The film is set to follow Miss Fisher as she rescues a young Bedouin woman from a prison in British Mandated Palestine. She pledges to help the woman, Shirin Abbas, discover the truth about the ‘Crypt of Tears,’ an ancient crypt that lies beneath the Negev Desert.

Essie, who was nominated for the 2014 and 2016 Gold Logie Award for her character, will be joined by her original co-stars Nathan Page, Miriam Margolyes and Ashleigh Cummings.

Essie and Nathan star as Phryne Fisher and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson.

The ABC TV Series, which ran for three seasons, is based on author Kerry Greenwood’s novels and was created by ‘Every Cloud Production’ duo Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger. The pair are back on board to co-executive produce, with Deb also returning as a writer. The TV series’ set-up director, Tony Tilse, will direct the film.

A successful crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter raised over AUD $730,000 for the production of the film. Screen Australia has also heavily invested in the movie, placing the budget at just over $8 million, and Roadshow Films is set to distribute it in Australia and New Zealand.

Sally Caplan, Head of Production at Screen Australia, said: “The Miss Fisher TV series has had extraordinary success with international sales in over 170 territories and is testament that strong female characters resonate with audiences. Every Cloud have smartly leveraged this fan base into crowd-funding for the film, and assembled the same creative team to expertly deliver a big screen chapter of the adventures of Miss Fisher with excellent commercial prospects.”

Joel Pearlman, co-CEO of Roadshow Films, adds: “We are incredibly excited to be working with Fiona, Deb, Tony and this incredible team to bring Miss Fisher to the screen.
