In July, former TODAY show host Lisa Wilkinson ventured out on an Italian adventure with her husband Peter FitzSimons – but it didn’t end well. The 57-year-old slipped on the wet bathroom floor of her hotel room and fell, shattering her wrist.

Lisa has now revealed the shocking extent of her injury – it nearly had to be amputated.

“The [Italian] doctors were very sweet but not very talented and they put a cast on that cut off my circulation for four or five days,” she told Channel 10’s Natarsha Belling at a Business Chicks event this week.

When the presenter returned home to Australia, local doctors told her she was within 24 hours of having her arm amputated.

Lisa explained that she was put in a full arm cast in Italy, despite only breaking bones in her wrist.

“When they put the cast on I was so out of it because they aren’t big believers in painkillers in Italy, I’ve now discovered. So they manipulated my bones back into position without any pain relief,” Lisa said.

Ouch!

“The Italian doctors didn’t charge me a cent, but God I wish they had because that would mean that money would be going into the Italian hospital system, I walked into the hospital and it was like walking into a building in Beirut,” she previously told Confidential.

“They need training desperately because they put a cast on that has basically strangled my arm so most of my issues now are shocking nerve damage. The doctor said it will be 12 months before I can get back to what I could do before the injury.”

Wow. We’re glad to see Lisa’s arm is on the mend!
